Porto vs PSV: Farioli and Bosz Meet Again After That Eredivisie Title Race

Porto vs PSV at the Estadio do Dragao on Tuesday 20 October is a meeting of two clubs who started this Champions League badly, and of two coaches with a score to settle. Porto lead the Primeira Liga unbeaten but lost at home to Manchester City on the opening night. PSV are second in the Eredivisie and still looking for a first league phase win.

Kick-off is 20:00 in Porto and the UK, 21:00 in Eindhoven, and 3pm ET in the US.

Farioli, Bosz and the title that got away

In 2024/25 Francesco Farioli's Ajax held a nine-point lead in the Eredivisie. Peter Bosz's PSV reeled them in over the final weeks and won the league by a point.

Farioli left Amsterdam that summer, took the Porto job and won the Portuguese title in his first season, which is a decent way to get over something. Now Bosz comes to his ground. Neither man will say it out loud, but beating the coach who pipped him in the Netherlands would mean a bit more to Farioli than three points usually do, and Bosz would enjoy winning in Portugal just as much.

Porto vs PSV: what's riding on it

Porto have no points after one game and still have a trip to Real Betis on Wednesday 14 October. PSV have one point from two. With only eight league phase games, the loser here is already chasing.

Porto's problem is Europe, not Portugal

Domestically there's not much to fix. Porto are top after eight games, unbeaten, with Sporting and Benfica behind them.

The City game was another story. On 8 September Manchester City won 2-0 at the Dragao, Erling Haaland scoring early in the second half and again in stoppage time. It was Porto's first home defeat of 2026, and the bit that should bother Farioli most is that they didn't manage a shot on target, which hadn't happened to them in a Champions League game since February 2017.

Betis, who won 3-2 at Lille on the opening night, are next. The full schedule is on UEFA's fixtures page.

PSV keep missing chances

PSV were second in the Eredivisie after eight matches, with six wins, a draw and a defeat, and 26 goals. Scoring at home isn't the issue.

In Europe it has been. They drew 1-1 with Shakhtar Donetsk on Matchday 1, then lost 1-0 at RB Leipzig on Tuesday 13 October. Ivan Perisic had a 19th-minute penalty saved by Maarten Vandevoordt, and Brajan Gruda scored the only goal 15 minutes from time. They make chances and don't take them. They visit ADO Den Haag on Saturday before flying to Portugal.

Injuries and suspensions

Porto's list before Betis included Zaidu Sanusi, Nehuen Perez and Joao Costa, and William Gomes was being treated for an ankle problem. Jan Bednarek missed the opening European games through a suspension carried over from his red card in Porto's last European match of last season.

PSV's squad will be clearer after the weekend.

The last time they met, 1993

Four meetings, the most recent more than 33 years ago. PSV won 5-0 in Eindhoven in October 1988, Ronald Koeman scoring twice, and went through in the European Cup despite losing 2-0 in Porto a fortnight later. In the 1992/93 Champions League group, Romario scored both PSV goals in a 2-2 draw in Porto, and Ze Carlos won the return 1-0 for Porto in Eindhoven from the penalty spot. So Porto have won two of the four, but the one PSV won is the one people remember.

Who wins?

Porto at home are the favourites, and Farioli's side look the more settled team. PSV are better than one point suggests, but they haven't been sharp enough in front of goal to make me trust them away from home. A lot depends on how both squads get through the next week.

I'll say Porto 2-1. PSV should score; Porto should still find the winner.
