Aston Villa
Manchester CityAston Villa vs Man City opens the Premier League Saturday on 24 October, kicking off at 12:30 at Villa Park (7:30 am on the US East Coast). On form it looks lopsided. Enzo Maresca's City won all six of their opening league games and went into the break top of the table, while Unai Emery's Villa had one win and sat 16th. Then again, Villa beat City 1-0 on this ground a year ago, Matty Cash scoring on 26 October 2025, so I wouldn't call it a stroll for anyone.
A summer that changed both clubs
City changed more than at any point in a decade. Pep Guardiola resigned and Maresca was appointed on 29 June. Rodri left for Barcelona, Bernardo Silva and John Stones were released, and the club spent big on Elliot Anderson, Enzo Fernández and Ayyoub Bouaddi. The results haven't dipped at all: 4-1 at Crystal Palace, 1-0 at Old Trafford, 5-3 against Sunderland and 3-0 at Anfield on 11 October. That's 16 scored and five conceded.
Villa won the Europa League in May, beating Freiburg 3-0 in the final, and then lost a lot of the team that did it. Morgan Rogers joined Chelsea for £117m, Ollie Watkins went to Al Hilal, Ezri Konsa moved to Arsenal, and Emiliano Martínez also ended up at Stamford Bridge. Emery has rebuilt with Nicolas Jackson, Johan Manzambi, João Gomes, Leon Goretzka and Taylor Harwood-Bellis.
It hasn't clicked in the league yet. One win, two draws and three defeats, with six scored and 11 conceded. They did win their Champions League opener at Club Brugge, which tells you the squad isn't hopeless.

Haaland against a back line still getting to know itself
Haaland had six league goals from six games, scoring in five of them, and he's adapted fast to a Maresca side that keeps the ball for long spells.
Villa's defence is where the summer hurt most. Konsa has gone, Harwood-Bellis is new, and Victor Lindelöf has been part of a back line that conceded four at Brighton and two at home to both Nottingham Forest and Brentford. If Villa sit deep, Haaland gets the crosses he lives on. If they push up, he's off into the space behind. I don't envy Emery that choice.
The midfield is where it gets decided
City's new pairing gives Maresca control plus runners from deep, and Fernández already has a league goal, against Sunderland. Villa will answer with legs and experience. João Gomes was signed from Wolves to win the ball back, and Goretzka arrived on a free from Bayern Munich with years of top-level pressing behind him.
If those two can stop City settling into a passing rhythm and turn it into a scrappy afternoon, Villa have a real chance. That's how they won this game last season.

Can Jackson give Villa an outlet?
Jackson is Villa's top league scorer with two, one of them in the 3-2 win at Tottenham, and he scored again in the 2-2 draw with Brentford on 10 October. He likes to run the channels and drag centre-backs out of position, which is about the only thing likely to bother captain Rúben Dias and Marc Guéhi, City's most reliable pairing. (Guéhi even scored in the opening-weekend win over Bournemouth.) Without Manzambi and Emiliano Buendía close to him, Jackson will spend the afternoon chasing long balls.
Emery's teams are best in a compact block that breaks quickly, with Villa Park roaring them on. Expect a mid-block, a high line at the right moments to catch City offside, and a long day for the full-backs against Jérémy Doku and Rayan Cherki, who already has four league goals.
Maresca's City are more patient than Guardiola's last sides were, happy to keep the ball and wait. They also host AEK Athens in the Champions League on 20 October, so there may be some rotation up front, though Haaland will probably start.
Aston Villa vs Man City prediction and likely line-ups
Villa can beat City here. They did it last October. But City have scored in every league game and conceded only five, and Villa's attack is still finding its feet without Watkins and Rogers. I think City win it, though not comfortably: Aston Villa 1-2 Manchester City.
Likely key starters, going by this season's team sheets (confirmed line-ups come an hour before kick-off):
- Aston Villa: Lindelöf, Harwood-Bellis, João Gomes, Goretzka, McGinn, Manzambi, Buendía, Jackson.
- Manchester City: Dias, Guéhi, Gvardiol, Fernández, Anderson, Doku, Cherki, Haaland.
