Inter haven't beaten Milan in a derby since April 2024, and every Inter fan will have heard that line a dozen times before AC Milan vs Inter on Saturday 31 October. Seven meetings since then have brought five Milan wins and two draws. Over the same stretch Inter won the league, finishing last season 17 points clear of their neighbours.
Kick-off at San Siro is 20:45 in Milan, which is 19:45 in the UK and 15:45 on the US East Coast.
A derby named after a statue
The Derby della Madonnina takes its name from the gilded Madonnina statue on top of Milan Cathedral. The two clubs share a city and a stadium, and they have now met 246 times in official matches. Going into this season Inter led that count with 91 wins to Milan's 84, with 71 draws. In Serie A alone the gap is wider: 70 Inter wins, 57 for Milan and 57 draws from 184 games.
Andriy Shevchenko is the fixture's top scorer with 14 goals. Zlatan Ibrahimović managed to score in it for both clubs, twice for Inter and eight times for Milan, which tells you something about Zlatan and something about Milan's transfer habits in that era.

The biggest win belongs to Milan: 6-0 in May 2001, on a night Inter supporters would rather forget. The craziest scoreline is older, an 11-goal 6-5 Inter win in November 1949.
Europe produced the most bitter chapters. Milan went through a Champions League semi-final in 2003 on away goals after two draws. Two years later, the second leg of a quarter-final was abandoned after Inter fans threw flares on to the pitch, and UEFA awarded Milan a 3-0 win. Inter got their European revenge in 2023, winning both legs of the semi-final and reaching the final.
Then came the strangest twist of all. Inter's 2-1 win in April 2024 sealed their 20th title, the first Scudetto ever decided in a Milan derby. Since then they haven't won one.

The most recent one, in March, was settled by Pervis Estupiñán in the 35th minute after Youssouf Fofana played him through on the left. Mike Maignan had denied Henrikh Mkhitaryan one on one moments earlier, and Inter had a stoppage-time goal ruled out because they took a corner too quickly for the referee. It cut Inter's lead to seven points with ten rounds left. They won the title anyway, with the Coppa Italia on top, and Cristian Chivu was named coach of the season.
Amorim's unbeaten start
Milan finished fifth on 70 points, and Massimiliano Allegri was sacked in May. Rubén Amorim arrived in June, and the first two months have gone better than plenty of people expected after his time in England.
Milan are unbeaten after seven league games, with four wins and three draws. Football Italia notes he is the first Milan coach since Luis Carniglia in 1963 to go unbeaten in his first seven Serie A matches. The latest was a 3-2 win over Atalanta on 18 October, with goals from Gonçalo Ramos (a penalty), Adrien Rabiot and Mario Gila. Amorim admitted afterwards that his side lost control in the second half.
The squad looks different. Rafael Leão left for Galatasaray, and Ramos came in from PSG for a reported €74m. Rabiot is the club's top league scorer with four. Europe has been patchier: a 2-0 home defeat to Benfica in the Europa League, followed by a 4-0 win in Salzburg.

Chivu's champions sit top on 19 points, level with Lazio, and their 21 league goals are the most in Serie A. They came from behind to win 3-1 at Bologna on 17 October through Marcus Thuram, Carlos Augusto and Ange-Yoan Bonny.
The worry is at the other end and in the treatment room. Inter lost 2-1 to Real Madrid and 4-3 to Club Brugge in the Champions League, and Lautaro Martínez, who scored twice against Brugge, has a left hamstring strain. Reports expect him to miss around seven games, the derby included, with a return pencilled in for the trip to Atalanta on 22 November. Chivu himself said the defending had to "start with me" after the Brugge game.
That puts more of the load on Thuram, who scored at Bologna and has been Lautaro's main partner up front.

AC Milan vs Inter: my pick and where to watch
Both sides play twice more in the league before this, so the table will shift a little. Still, the shape of the game feels clear. Milan under Amorim have been hard to beat and have conceded only seven in seven. Inter score plenty but have been leaking goals, and they will be without the player who usually decides these nights.
Inter's run without a derby win can't last forever, and they have the better squad on paper. I'd still lean towards a draw, something like 1-1, with Milan more than capable of stretching that run to eight.
